The Phantom F-4E / F is still regarded as the workhorse of the western countries. Originally developed for use on aircraft carriers, it has a very robust structure that can also in combat suffered major damage.
With the Phantom numerous records were broken, it was and is at more than 11 air forces in action - a total of over 5000 machines produced. As with the previous models - F-4C and D - turned out the lack of cannon armament, especially when working in Vietnam, as most harmful was a completely revised version, the F-4E, supported the new requirements. 3
As a successor to the already more than 10 years in employment for F-104G Starfighter The German Air Force opted for the purchase of 185 units of type F-4F Phantom, which corresponded with a few small changes to the F-4E. On 7 March 1974 landed the first two F-4F in Wittmundhafen / Ostfriesland Fighter Wing 71 "Richthofen".
Apart from their use as a fighter, the Phantom was still a second role as a tactical combat aircraft. Today the use of phantom only flies where it all began, with Fighter Wing 71 "Richthofen".
