The North American F-86F Sabre is undoubtedly one of the best fighters of their time. At North American in September 1945 with a named the designation XP-86 fighter was developed that would go down as a legend in the history of aviation. In February 1949, the 1st Fighter Group, USAF, was equipped with the F-86A-5. The beginning of the Korean War in November 1950 accelerated the development of the F-86 Sabre. The company has already received Canadair in August 1949 a license to build the F-86. With the introduction of the ultimate Sabre, the F-86F, expanded its license by Candair on another version. The last version was the Sabre Mk.6 with an enlarged wing and extendable leading edge slats. On 2 September 1958 the first two Sabre Mk.6 of the Air Force Weapons School were transferred 10 to Oldenburg. From the previously estimated number of four fighter squadrons with Mk.6 were three units. One of these units was the Jagdgeschwader 71 "Richthofen" Ahlhorn under the leadership of the legendary fighter ace Lieutenant Colonel Erich "Bubi" Hartmann.
