Description

75 P-38Ls were modified to the P-38M night fighter, or “Night Lightning”. They were painted flat black, with conical flash hiders on the guns, and equipped with a radar pod below the nose and a raised canopy behind the pilot’s canopy for the radar operator. The additional external clutter imposed little penalty on the P-38M’s performance, and it ramained faster than the purpose-built P-61 Black Widow.
