Description

"1940 - 1945".

                              M36 JACKSON

The Jackson M36 tank destroyers were developed as a counter to heavily armed German tanks like the Panther and Tiger tanks. Equipped with a 90mm gun, the Jackson received its name from Confederate States of America general Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. The design was based on the M10 chassis which was completed in 1942 with the first prototype being completed in March 1943 as the T71 Motor carriage. 500 were initially ordered and in June 1944 the designation was officially changed to the M36.

The Jackson tank destroyer featured an open-top turret in line with all American tank destroyers in the era to save weight and also to allow better observation. The M36 first saw combat in September 1944 in Europe and earned its reputation of being able to take out heavy German tanks from a distance. Over the course of WWII, 1400 M36 tanks were produced.

After WWII, folding armoured roof kits were produced to provide protection from shell fragments.

M36 Jackson tank destroyers were used during the Korean War, where they were an important defence against the Russian-made armoured vehicles used. They were also used in several other conflicts up to the 1990s including Indo-China where they were used by the French forces, Yugoslavia (including Croatia and Bosnia in the 1990s) and Pakistan.
