The American-designed and produced M1A1 Abrams tank is a most impressive main battle tank (MBT). The original M1 MBT entered service in 1980, but the improved M1A1 that appeared in 1985 offered a much better performance thanks to the inclusion of an M256 smoothbore 120mm main gun. Powered by a novel gas turbine engine, the M1 Abrams has proved a huge success, despite its gas-guzzling personality. The 61.3-ton tank has fought very effectively in such conflicts as the 1991 Gulf War, Kosovo in the 1990s, 2003 Iraq War, and even latterly in Afghanistan in the hands of the US Marine Corps. Some tanks are fitted with a front-mounted mine plough that’s designed to push mines out of the way as the tank advances. This impressive type of M1A1 tank with mine plough is featured in Cyber-Hobby’s newest Orange Box release. The 1/35 scale tank is accompanied by a set of four plastic soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division “The Big Red One”. These figures reflecting modern-day uniforms and weapons are in action poses, and interestingly, one of them is even digging up a mine. This means he’d fit in perfectly with a diorama showing the tank and its attached mine plough in action! Soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division have appeared in a number of modern conflicts such as the Gulf War, the Balkans and Iraq, so this vehicle and figure combination offers a host of possibilities straight from the box. And as is to be expected from Orange Box, this modern US Army set offers modelers unbeatable value for money.
