Zvezda 8515 ROMAN TRIREME

The trireme derives its name from its three rows of oars, manned with one man per oar. The question is, did the 'three' indicate three rows in all or three rows on either side? In modern languages the number in a word or phrase describing an arrangement of oars indicates the number in all, for example in modern Greek the word diplokopos describes a boat with two rows of oars in all, as does the Italian doppio ordine di reme and the English double banked. The early trireme was a development of the penteconter, an ancient warship with a single row of 25 oars on each side (i.e. a double banked boat), and of the bireme, a warship with two banks of oars, probably of Phoenician origin, although there is no mention in ancient literature of a type of ship intermediate between the penteconter and the trireme. The word dieres does not appear until the Roman period. "It must be assumed that the term pentekontor covered the two-level type". As a ship it was fast and agile, and became the dominant warship in the Mediterranean from the 7th to the 4th centuries BC, when they were largely superseded by the larger quadriremes and quinqueremes. Triremes played a vital role in the Persian Wars, the creation of the Athenian maritime empire, and its downfall in the Peloponnesian War.
