Description

PZL.24 fighter was the latest design of high wing all metal PZL designs build with characteristic wing called afther its designer Pulawaki wing. Seen from head on view this wing resembles gull`s wing. PZL.24 design followed the PZL.11c design of then modern Polish fighter. The main difference was the accommodation of Gnome-Rhone 10 engine (particular version of PZL.24 were powerd by various subversions of this engine) compared to Bristol Mecure used in the PZL.11c. Another distinctive feature was the enclosed canopy used first on the third and the last prototypes and became standard feature of the production machines. Polish Air Force was not interested in PZL.24 and awaited (and it didn`t live to see it) its more modern follower, low wing PZL.50 Jastrab. Therefore PZL.24`s were produced for export purpose. Particular version of PZL.24 differed in cowling shapes used propellers and arament. PZL.24`s were purchased by Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey and Greece, with license production set up in Romania an Turkey, Romanian designers used PZL.24 as a base for their domestic design IAR.80. While Bulgarian and Turkish machines served in peace, Romanian and Greek machines were combat deployed. greek pilots scored at least 20 victories over their Italian opponents. The turnover became with Wehrmacht involment. Both Greek Air Force and army were not able to resit this superiority. Even though, Greek PZL.24`s are credited with several victories over German aircraft
