The German '' Narvik '' class destroyer was a formidable ship and in terms of armament and speed could almost be likened to a light cruiser. armed with 5.9in guns and able to carry up to 60 mines, these ships operated mainly in Norwegian waters and although many were lost in action against superior forces, a number survived the war to sail with Allied navies. Developed from earlier Leberecht Maass and von Roeder class destroyers built pre-war, the Narviks consisted of 17 ships designated Z23 - Z39 and all laid down between 1939-1941. The kit depicts Z28 wich was a flotilla leader, had a slighty revised armament layout and an enlarged aft accommodation area. Launched in 1940 she became leader of the 8th Zerstörer-Flotille Narvik surviving until March 1945 when she was sunk by Allied aircraft. Z28 had a dispacement of 2.596 tons, a compliment of 327 officers and men, a range of 5.800 miles at 19kt and a armament of four 5.9 in, six 37mm AA, seven 20 mm guns and eight 21in torpdo tubes.
