Unimog U1300L THW
Originally the Universal-Motor-Gerät, known for short as the Unimog, was developed as an agricultural vehicle to improve the supply situation for the population after the Second World War. Over time this exceptional all-wheel drive vehicle, due to its versatility, proved itself in many spheres. The vehicle underwent continuous further development and modification. In the 1970s the rather more angular U1300L version came out, in which the L refers to the longer rear frame overhang. The U1300L was also of interest to the Federal German army. From 1978 this all-wheel drive Unimog was used as a transporter for men and materials. It could carry a payload of 2.2 tonnes, was ideally suited for off-road use due to its high ground clearance and offered a fording depth of 1.20 m. Its four-cylinder turbocharged engine delivered 130 bhp and gave the vehicle a maximum speed of 82 km/h.
Due to the advantages of this vehicle, for years the THW (Technische Hilfswerk = technical relief organisation) has relied on second-hand Federal German Army Unimogs to enable them to fulfil their main mission, technical response to disasters and accidents. The Technische Hilfswerk is the Federal German civil protection organisation, operated by over 80,000 volunteers and about 800 workers in the head office. With technical knowledge and specialist equipment the THW is a competent partner for the fire brigades, police and other aid organisations in Germany, Europe and throughout the world.
