ICONS OF AVIATION ''TIGER MEET''
The NATO Tiger Association was founded in 1961. The first Tigermeet took place in the same year at Woodbridge, Great Britain. The founding members included the USAF (in Europe) with the 79th Tactical Fighter Squadron, RAF 74 Sqn and French Air Force EC 1/12. The main aims of this meeting are to promote greater solidarity between the member states, to make and develop personal contacts, and to initiate a better understanding of NATO concerns and mutual aims. In recent years all new squadrons have joined the NATO Tigers, so that the NATO Tigermeet can now look back on a very lively tradition. During the 1969 Tigermeet in Baden-Solingen an aircraft (F-104) appeared for the first time complete with tiger stripes and since then this special type of livery has become a tradition.
The NATO Tigermeet is held each year at a different place and includes various exercises for the participating aircraft. The individual units present their impressive flying capabilities with appropriate commitment. Another symbol of the particularly high commitment of the Tiger Association is that the special liveries of the different units become ever more imaginative at each meet and create a great sensation among the public.
The Phantom is one of the most powerful and versatile aircraft of the period since the 2nd World War. It is in service in eleven countries including 5 NATO states. Derived from the RF-4C, the RF-4E version went into service with the German Air Force in 1971 as the most capable tactical reconnaissance plane used by the Western air forces. The 88 reconnaissance places in the German Air Force were mainly split between the stations at Leck (AG 52) and Bremgarten (AG 51). The aerial photography equipment is as follows: several individual film cameras, a low altitude panorama camera, an infra-red scanner, a side-looking radar system. The RF-4E shown here received its special livery for the 1991 Tigermeet in Fairford. Reconnaissance Squadron 52, Leck sent 2 aircraft to the meet.
The Mirage 2000 is a highly versatile combat plane that can carry out a large number of roles. Due to its aerodynamic shape it has good climbing power and excellent manoeuvrability in air combat. The Mirage 2000 C is the single-seat fighter-interceptor version and is equipped with modern technology and flight control systems. The Mirage 2000-5F is the version with the latest current performance improvements and is used at both Dijon and Mont de Marson in the EC5/330, which has worn a tiger emblem in its coat of arms since 2000. The aircraft has participated in many Tigermeets already; one of the most impressiveliveries however was shown at the 2004 Tigermeet in Schleswig Jagel.
