'' Hawker TEMPEST Mk.V ''
Hawker Tempest ranked among the best and the most effective aircraft of the Second World War. it had been developed from the fighter Hawker Typhoon from 1940 wich was very modern at that time. Several versions were developed wich differed in engines, in particular. The fighter Tempest V was the first of them. It was equipped with a tried Sabre II twenty four-cillinder in-line engine wich was installed in al the production Typhoons. The prototype of Typhoon took off for the first time of September 2 ,1942. The first production Typhoons. The first production machine took off as on June 21, 1943. Tempests V were delivered to air regiments in Janaury ,1944 and went to operational service in April of the same year. The long range allowed them to operate from bases in Kent above North France and above Holland. Afther the allied invasions of Normady and the consequent attack of the German rockets V 1 agianst Engeland Tempests were successfully used for destroying the rockets in the air. From June to September 1944 the Tempest shot down 638 rockets out of 1.771 ! Afther the Germans stopped their raids the Tempests were transferred to France and Belgium to support the allied troops. The attacked enemy land bases with machine-guns as well as rockets and bombs. Their high speed and exelent flight characteristics allowed them to fight against the latest German jet fighter Me-262 and scored more than 20 kills
